Deadly flooding in Central Texas killed more than 130 people in July, including 25 girls at a summer camp and their counselors. Multiple wildfires in Los Angeles and neighboring areas burned out of control for weeks in January, causing dozens of deaths and massive destruction. 2025 experienced several high-profile plane crashes including a mid-air collision near Washington Reagan National airport in January between an Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet that killed 67 people. A UPS cargo plane crash in Louisville, Kentucky also killed 12 people. Music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs sentenced to 50 months behind bars after his conviction in July on prostitution-related charges, but he was acquitted of more serious charges including racketeering and sex trafficking.

2025 kicked off with a red wave in Washington as Republicans took over the House, Senate and White House. President Trump began upending the establishment from the day he was sworn into office. That included steep cuts to the government as part of the DOGE campaign, passage of his “one, big, beautiful bill” and the deployment of national guard soldiers as part of a massive crackdown of illegal immigrants. The president focused on the economy instituting new tariffs against every country in the world. There was also battle over government funding that resulted in the longest shutdown in U.S. government history. It was also a year of political violence that culminated in the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

HEALTH: AUTISM IN DOGS———-TINA KRAUS REPORTS FROM LONDON
It turns out being on the spectrum may not just apply to people. A British scientist says dogs can experience a form of autism, although veterinarians won’t formally diagnose it. Dr. Jacqueline Boyd says canines share key structural and chemical brain differences with people – making them susceptible to similar disorders. She says the neurodevelopmental condition can be linked to repetitive behaviors, hyper-focus, and sensory sensitivity. The technical term vets use is ‘canine dysfunctional behavior.’

People do it, monkeys do it – even polar bears get in on the action. Now researchers in the UK are investigating the science of smooching. Their study suggests the mouth-on-mouth kiss dates back more than 21 million years, likely starting with the common ancestor of humans and other great apes. The research shows Neanderthals may have kissed too – and that humans and Neanderthals may even have even shared a kiss or two.
